How the leaderboard score works

Games are scored equally across four signals: downloads, comments, reviews, and funds raised. Each signal is measured against a fixed target — 100 downloads, 100 comments, 100 reviews, and KES 1,000 raised — and caps at 100%. The four values are then averaged.

The leaderboard score shown on each card is that average relative to the current highest-scoring game. A score of 100 means a game currently has the highest combined total; a score of 50 means half of it. Scores are relative to the current leaderboard population and may change as other games gain activity.

Rankings use all recorded downloads, comments, reviews, and funds raised for eligible games. Games with downloads, comments, reviews, or recorded financial support are eligible for the leaderboard.

Driven by the team's research, within a bustling workshop, fifty skilled developers from seven African countries joined forces with an adept Africa-based technical and artistic team. Through exploration and character-driven storytelling, participants engage with the complexities of the past—navigating spaces, voices, and moments often absent from traditional historical narratives. Developed in collaboration with researchers and cultural partners including SOAS University of London, the project draws from ongoing work around the legacies of slavery and their continued impact on communities today. Designed for exhibition spaces, Umoja encourages reflection, dialogue, and emotional connection. It creates an environment where visitors can move beyond passive learning to a more personal and participatory engagement with difficult histories. Umoja – The Game is part of a broader effort to explore how interactive media can expand the ways history is shared, understood, and remembered.
